Fall-Winter Tomatoes

Summer is behind us, but that doesn't mean the end of home gardening. Think about growing some tomatoes inside that will provide flavor to your table that you won't get with tomatoes that have traveled long distance and gone through processes before reaching you.

If you have a south-facing window, think about growing some tomatoes in pots indoors where you can give them time and attention. If necessary you can add supplemental lighting with a fluorescent fixture.

This will work well if you have either a large window, or a sliding glass door. As temperatures cool outside and winter looms, think of the pride and fulfillment you will feel as your tomatoes ripen and are taken to you table., not to mention how these tomatoes will appeal to your taste buds.

Purchased tomatoes add substance to your salads and dishes, but certainly cannot compete with the flavor, aroma and nutritional benefits of those that are home grown. Have you noticed that tomatoes from the store no longer smell like tomatoes? Aroma is much of the eating experience. Like fine wine, the aroma of a home grown tomatoe adds greatly to the eating experience.

Growing tomatoes in containers is not just for the patio.
